STC 8.50 x 6

Post by lawson »

Does anyone have an STC for 8.50 x 6 wheels? I have a 51' Cessna 170a, and want to put on Goodyear 8.50 x 6. To make it legal, i need that piece of paper. Thanks. Cameron

Jim Hayton (Sedro Wooley) and Kenmore (?)
have STCs for the 180, but I don't know of an
STC for the 170 (?). I put my 850s on via a 337.

just about every 170 and 180 in Alaska is on 8.50's, or bigger. And they've all been done on Field Approvals. A few years ago the local FAA even came up with a "Tundra Tire" worksheet to standardize the process. Since it's all the same FAA now <g> maybe your local inspector should call the ANC or FAI FSDO and find out why this doesn't warrant a full-blown STC.

this smells much like the recent STC for 180 gear legs on 170's. This is another mod that's been done 100's of times with simple Field Approval. It appears that one inspector in the NE was unfamiliar with this common upgrade and forced a member to get an STC. Now that there's an STC available you can't get the reasonable (and free) Field Approval anymore, you've got to buy the STC.

please, nip this in the bud. We don't want to be in the position of having to buy an STC for every little minor upgrade to our 50 year old planes. Maybe part of your problem is getting your 170 serviced at a "Jet Center"....

I don't mind if someone gets an STC approved for this stuff. I know up in Alaska the FAA is very generous with field approvals, but here in the lower 48 it is getting tougher and tougher to get things signed off. If the STC is reasonably priced, I would be willing to pay for it to reduce the amount of time my aircraft was grounded and reduce the hassle factor.

8.50 x 6's field approval

Post by lawson »

Thank you everyone for your input on getting the 8.50's x 6's approved. For anyone that's interested, this is what I found out.

Getting a field approval(more common in AK) is possible, and depends on who you talk to. The local FSDO wouldn't do it, but the ANCH and BOI FSDO will. I was told it's a simple process.

There is a 'tundra tire worksheet', and past approval info.

If you're interested in getting the 'tundra tire' worksheet, and associated paperwork, you can call Wanda Gillon at the Anchorage FSDO. Her number is 907-271-2000.

Thanks again for all your advice.

Problem is Cameron is that the IA and the modification has to be done in the FSDO jurisdiction that the 337 is filed with. My IA located Pennsylvania can't seen paperwork to Alaska.

Hi Bruce:

From my understanding, I could fly my plane down to Boise and meet up with an IA and do the field approval in BOI, then fly home. It would be a bit of a hassle, but the ultimate goal of getting the larger tires approved would be accomplished.
