My mixture cable on my '54 broke yesterday and I have replaced it with a new one with a black knob. Works great, but I have a nice original panel and I would like to keep it that way. The original knob is swagged on. Is there any way to reuse the old knob or get a matching replacement?

Not sure about swapping the knob to another control. Never tried it.
Replacement controls with knobs nearly identical to original are available through Cessna parts sources like Cessnaparts.com, Yingling, etc (and probably A/C Spruce). Recently bought one for my '52. When I bought mine I discovered that the mixture p/n has been superceded by the carb heat control p/n (must be the same length). What this means is that you do NOT get the Control Stops (the little gizmo that keeps the mixture control from moving once it is set). So, if you already have an original mixture control, be sure to save these for when you install the new one.

This has worked successfully for me twice. Cut off the old control wire flush with the end of the shaft the control knob is attached to. Drill out the old control wire. (.054 if memory serves but it probably doesn't) This does not take much as ithe wire does not extend into the shaft much beyond the swage. Insert new control wire into the now hollow shaft. Silver solder the new wire to the shaft. It would be nice if you could add a new swage also but so far I have not found it necessary.
