Any thoughts on these handles? Does a 170B have lifting eyes?

I have used the handles. They are very helpful, especially if you use larger tires or are the "Climb on the strut" type for refueling. But most C-170's do not have the float plane lifting eyes necessary to utilize them.

My concern with keeping those lifting eyes permanently installed is the potential for moisture to drain down around the wing attach fittings and carry through spar hat section. Those of you operating on floats would know if this is a valid concern. Do you float operators keep those lifting eyes in year round?

If I wanted such a thing, and I can see them being useful, I'd make my own at a 10th of the cost. That is what I think.

Just the lifting-eyes alone should be useful for a hand-grab. (A sturdy folding ladder or foot-stool is better yet, IMO, and can double as a nice seat at flyh-in’s and airshows. The one depicted here is a short one.... but a 39” tall one is available from Bed Bath Beyond for $25. And WalMart has some even taller. Should fit in the baggage compt.)

Pete Jones used to have the lifting eyes at Air Repair, 662-846-0228, if they aren’t out of stock.
Some guys clip a carabiner into the lifting eyes to use as a hand-hold which is easy to use and remove. Generally, fueling steps on the side of the fuselage and wing strut are added along with the lifting eyes when on floats.
The rubber grommet seals out water pretty well depending on how accurate the holes in the cabin top skin are drilled. Most guys go ahead and use sealant to insure they are waterproof.
