Look for a certain C-170

Post by EDGE-Henning »

Hello members and readers of the The International Cessna 170 Association!

A Cessna C-170 is looked for, which had the registration D-EGUN in the 50er years.
The pilot is supposed to have had the name "Mathiesen."
Does somebody have an idea, whether this airplane of still exist, possibly also under other registration, as well as knows somebody the pilots?
Reason is a historically valuable as well as also funny incident during the iron curtain.
The picture below shows the machine on the airfield Erfurt approximately 1957/58, therefore before the transformation of the Airports.

If you know the machine or the pilot, if you know, whether the airplane of still exist, you please enter into contact with me.

there's no Cessna with the serial number 20579 on the US registry. Perhaps it is registered in another country or has been destroyed.

Hello Henning,

From the looks of your research, the aircraft left the factory immediately for Europe; first in Switzerland and then Germany as you have discovered.

Since, as Spiro pointed out, there is no Cessna 170 with serial number 20579 on the U.S. registry, I would concentrate your search in Europe. In the U.S. the FAA allows us to look up aircraft registration over the internet using a variety of criteria including registration number, serial number, etc. Does the German aviation authority allow something similar? If not, perhaps you could contact them directly? Your information states that the German registration was from 1956 - 1979. Can the German aviation authority tell you what happened in 1979? In the U.S. the FAA can tell you if it was sold, destroyed, etc. I would hope the German authority could give you similar information.

The one thing we can confirm so far is that the aircraft is NOT in registered in the U.S.

Good luck in your search. Be sure to let us know when you find it!
Doug

Hello Spiro and doug8082a,
At first once cordial thanks for you for your help!
I still ask, my harrowing English Excuses.
In Germany, one gets from the responsible authority, that aeronautics federal office (Luftfahrt Bundesamt - LBA), no information as private person.
But your information nevertheless helped me since I, that am not the machine in the U.S.A or Canada, now know.
It becomes of course if the airplane was found and/or his/its pilot, appear in the forum a report over the incident here if this is wanted.
This incident is interestingly veterans also for military since Germany was apportioned into the Soviet occupation zone (GDR) and into the USA/UK/France occupation zone (FRG) at that time.
Many greetingses from the Wartburg city Eisenach
