Hi,
I have a 1948 170 based in Australia. I have just installed the DelAir o360 STC and an MT prop (done legally in Australia with an engineering order) I’m wondering if anyone has worked out a way to add fuel or plumbing in a ferry tank system to their ragwing 170’s? I have heard of people adding another tank to the port wing but haven’t been able to find anything on it. Happy to hear from anyone with suggestions.

This thread has a 337 for installing a fourth tank in the left wing. In the US that 337 would be considered approved data because it is dated before October 1, 1955.
Per the TCDS, the Javelin aux tank is approved for all models of 170. Personally I think the negatives outweigh the positives and I'm not even counting the obscene price they fetch when they come up for sale. It uses an electric pump to move fuel to the wing tanks, so you must plan as if the transfer will fail. It is installed behind the rear seat so it becomes a divider between the passenger and baggage areas; annoying if you want to fold down or remove the rear seat to transport something large.
My opinion: I own a '48 with the stock fuel tanks and I sometimes fly a 180 with the Javelin tank. With the 0-300 I'm doing ok with 33.5 gallons, but I'm keeping that 337 in my back pocket and will seriously consider installing a 4th tank if we end up getting into the wings. If I owned the 180 I would remove and sell the Javelin tank.
