George,
I do not know if the inspector filed a report. I have been in contact with Continental myself and they have been directed to file a warranty claim for my cost of inspection ($315.00). They also acknowledge that they have a quality control problem that they are addressing internally.

Wow. Well... at least they acknowledge it. If they’re having much trouble their CRS will be at-risk. Thanks.pdb wrote:George,

I am overhauling my C-145. As such, new/overhauled mags are required. The Bendix kit price just recently went up by $700, to $3,500. Surefly just told me that they are not expected to be approved anytime soon. Any ideas?

The kits are $650 at Spruce: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... epair4.php
Ovhl/Exchange are about $1K from Spruce.

I am replacing Slick 6465s. You can’t just do a 500 hr inspection, OH is required per SB1-86B. If I am going that far then I prefer Bendix. $3,530 buys the kit with harness and plugs. Slicks kit is $3,470. I guess I am just griping in general. Aviation is expensive.

The confusion stems from the Subject/Title “Continental Mags”. Continental now owns what used to be referred as “Bendix”.flaglor wrote:I am replacing Slick 6465s. There are several magnetos by various mfr’s which can be fitted to Continental engines which are not actually associated with Continental.

Re: Continental Mags: Are they junk?
Recently, I spoke with a Surefly rep at the Pacific Northwest Aviation Conference and asked them about getting their electronic ignition approved on the 170. Their response was that the Surefly box was too long to fit between the engine and firewall. They showed it too me and yes, it appeared longer than the Bendix / Continental mags that are on it. They kindly referred me to Electroair who has an electronic ignition system that is STC’d for the O-300 on the 170B. I double checked the AML and it’s true. I have no idea how it affects the engine performance.

Re: Continental Mags: Are they junk?
I would strongly recommend not installing an Electroair system. Take this from someone who has installed, troubleshot, repaired, and eventually removed several of these systems.
