Trim

Post by 170C »

My 172 ('56) seems heavier on the controls than several A model 170's I have flown in the past year. I haven't had an opportunity to fly a B model 170 lately. Don't know that Ole Pokey is perfectly rigged either? As many A's & B's as we have around, we should have a flyin and try the vrs aircraft out to see what the differences are in feel, etc. I realize two A's or 2 B's may feel different as individual planes will vary, but it would be interesting to compare them. I'll throw in my 172 TD into to mix if anyone wants to compare its handling, etc. I know from looking at data on the C-180's that they, as the pilots, got heavier as they got into later models. I am pretty sure the '56-'59 172's were all about the same, but weight & tail changes came in 1960 (?) I think.

In '60 they swept the tail, in '61 they offered the O-300-C/D engines (6-bolt EM series props and vacuum pumps/angle-drive starters, respectively), lengthened the engine mounts/changed the cowl to a slightly more streamlined appearance, lengthened the spinner, shortened the landing gear 3", and added the baggage door., in '62 they increased gross wt 50# to 2250 (purely paperwork), and in '63 they made actual real changes with the "Omni-vision" rear window, squared panel, center-stack avionics, added 8" length to the tail (and another 50#, increasing gross to 2300#), offered the child-seat, and made the 50,000th Cessna!

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)

While I don't have any 170 time my '56 C172 ois very light on the elevator. I can't imagine what a 170 would be like!
