Folks:
The mechanic performing the annual on my 48 170 I believe, has reversed the curcular fittings that hold the berrings in-place in the wheel assembly. The reason that I'm thinking this is that I believe I recall these plates having a nipple on them that when inserted in the yoke, ensures that the wheel cannot contact the yoke. and has the axle nut is tightened, pressure is put on these fittings. The way it is now the plates are flat on the outside and there is no way that the yolk will make contact with them.
Can anyone let me know if they think this makes sense? Something is wrong and I know that I have (had) all of the parts as this wheel has been functioning flawlessly for 3 years and I know that there has never been this much play in the tailwheel parallel to the axle.

Order of parts for each side are as follows:
(from inside outward)
1. 13287 bearing cup (timken A4050)
2. 13286 bearing cone (timken A4138)
3. 1862 retainer (same shape as your wedding band only larger)
4. 1863 Grease retainer (solid side should be outboard)
5. 3227 Spacer (Looks like a flat washer welded to a bushing)
6. 18107 washers (AN960-816) AS needed
I believe you are talking about #5, 3227 spacer. The flat washer side should be outboard with the bushing inboard going thru the 1862 grease retainer touching the bearing. You need to tighten the axle bolt until this touches the bearing. If you have to tighten it too much, you need to install item # 6 washers between the spacer and the yolk as needed, preferrably equal number on each side of tailwheel.

And...keep in mind that the tailwheel yoke is an aluminum casting. Only the slightest amount of "flex" or compression will be allowed before it will snap. It is not designed to allow much actual movement. MIssing parts will contribute to breakeage.

Everyone:
Thanks so much for the help. I went back to the shop this morning and found the 2 missing parts sitting on the mechanics work bench, even though we "swore" that he re-assembled the wheel with all of the parts that came off it! Unbelievable.
