3 Blade Propeller - 170 A & B

I've just completed the installation of a McCalley Symitar, 3 blade propeller on my 1952 170 B. The engine is an O-360 A1A Lyc. with 180 HP. The performance figures are still being monitored but I can see an increase in climb performance right away. No real measurable increase in cruise has yet to be confirmed. The biggest gain (or loss) is with noise level. I still can't belive how quite the new prop is, both in climb & cruise. Can you give us the prop description and diameter? What are we looking at for costs? Keep us posted as to your experience with performance vs, the 7666 blade Hartzel or the 8477-4 blade Hartzel if known. Thanks, Charlie

I have the 8477-4 prop on my airplane, and it performs well. I've also operated that prop on a Husky. I am currently operating a Husky with a MT composite prop, which outperforms the Hartzell. Its not currently approved for the 170, but I'm betting it will be soon.

And, the composite prop is 30 pounds lighter than the Hartzell 8477-4 prop and damper.

What is the weight of the 3 blade prop?

I'll bet that 3 blade gives it a real smooth sound. There's a guy at our field who flies a Glastar with a 320 Lycoming & 3 blade c/s prop, it sounds like a turbine or something when he's climbing out.

You're right - The sound is really different - Cool. The prop and spinner are around $7900.00 to $8500.00 (depending on who you call). It's a beautiful installation with the polished spinner. I'm not sure what Gold Coast Aviation will want for use of the STC, contact Larry for that info. The Prop weighs 71.3 Lbs. - a 14.3 Lb increase over the old Prop. When I get more details on performance I'll post them here. See Ya', Glynn.
