Original Paint Scheme
I have a 1949 C-170A, S/N 18812 and would like to know the original factory paint scheme. Does anyone know of a website that has such info? The original interior is green trim with green tweed like fabric. The exterior was repainted sometime in three shades of green that I know is not standard.

Richard, I have an original B&W photo of a 49 A model, but you'll have to wait until I get home and hope I remember to email it to you. Get my email address off the front of the Flypaper and send me a request to remind me.

I have found that one of the best resources for paint and interior information are the original factory ads and sales material. They are regularly available on a certain auction site that if mentioned by name will get you severely chastised, and possibly banned from this forum.
No need to buy them unless you really want them as there is usually a picture of the item being sold.

ghostridr,
Also email or pm me to remind me to see if I have photos of original '49 schemes. Cleo Bickford emailed me a whole folder full of original paint scheme photos for the convention judges last year. Not sure if a '49 is amongst them, but will probably need a reminder at home to check.

I have posted the photos of paint and interior schemes from the convention judging packet at

There are scans from Cessna sales literature as well as more recent photos.
The only A-model represented is the '51; I'm not sure why.

The lay out for my original paint job was still on my plane when I stripped the paint since the major portion was bare aluminum it was real easy to mask and paint the trim. I took the cowling to a local sign shop and he made masks for the logos on it. I also had him do the same for the vertical stabilizer. Bill K.

Guys,
I have had the same question for a straight tail 172 that I am restoring.
1. You may be able to order the original paint drawings from Cessna. Phone number for Cessna parts ordering is 206-371-1519. Have the year and S/N available. I got them for my 1957 172. You will pay about $50 for the print.
2. I have a webpage where I compiled the straight tail brochures/photos of the various straight tail paint schemes from 1956-1959. If you guys have the original brochure for a 170 scan it in and attach it to this thread. I will add it to the page for archival purposes.
here is the website.
