Tailwheel size

Post by tshort »

Don't have the airplane nearby to look...
A friend is building me a taildragger dragger (or similar contraption) in a welding class and needs to know the diameter of the C-170 tailwheel.
Anyone know offhand?

Thanks
Thomas

I'm not sure of exactly which measurement you need. In my hands I have a tape measure and a wheel with tire mounted. The wheel itself is 4 and 13/16 at it's largest diamter. Including the tire, it's 8 and 1/2 inches.

Hope this helps.

Put it in a 10" cube of cardboard and send it to me.

Wouldn't do ya much good George, unless you can find some oversize (OD) bearing races. The bores in the wheel halves are worn to the point that the races fall out. :o That's why it's in my box-o-junk and not on the airplane.

I really shouldn't say this but if the fit is snug enough to keep it centered I'd JB weld new races in it and keep it for emergency use.

Yeah, it'd sure be easier to just swap out tailwheels than to replace tire & tube out in the weeds somewhere. Wouldn't take up any more room than your spare t/w tire and tube -- you do carry one, don't you?-- or weigh a heck of a lot more either.
