Aux tank? Where how much?

Post by cfiatzph »

Anybody have a aux tank for a C-170? Where does it go is it behind the rear seat or behind the baggage compartment? How much does it cut down on storage? How much does it cost and how hard/time wise is it to install? Where do you buy it?

Thanks

The original Javelin tank was approved via the type certificate. It was installed on the floor of the baggage compartment and took up a few inches of height (approx. 6 inches) It held 18-19 gallons, and was filled via a filler neck which was accessed on the right side of the fuselage behind/below the rear window, about floor-height. It used a pump, and after sufficient fuel had been burned off from the right main tank, it's fuel was transferred via electric pump to the right main tank.
Cost is now a moot point. If you want it, you must pay what you must, and the installation can be as difficult or as simple as depends upon how complete the parts-list is when you buy it. The Assn has copies of the installation. No STC is req'd since it's approved on the type cert.
The more modern O&N kit (for 172's) is almost identical, but not approved for the 170. http://www.onaircraft.com/products.htm Any install of that nature will require an approval basis. (Usually field approval.) The current price is about $2400 plus 25 hours labor. The Flint folks have a wing-tip tank mod, and I'm not that familiar with it, but their kit for 170s and info may be found at:

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)

I have a 9 gallon aux tank in the baggage area of my 170 that was installed in '63 and appears to have been home made (we think it was a VW bug tank). It sits up against the back seat so baggage has to be put behind it and the filler neck is out the right side. I don't know if it can help you or not but I have the 337 that diagrams the installation

If you don't mind the expense here is another STCed option:

Javelin Aux Tank

As stated, the O&N is not approved for the 170. There is one (Javelin)available on Ebay right now, check there.

The one on ebay is about four times the going price. I had a Javelin in the 170 and now have one in the 180. They work well but for several reasons I'd try my best to get the fuel in the wings if I were doing it. Either the Flint or more preferably 175 wings if you can get them approved.

Increased Fuel Capacity - C 170

Post by john rogers »

Del-Air has STC's to modify your existing C-170 fuel tanks and increase the usable fuel capacity. One such STC'd adds 7 gallons of usable fuel per tank for an increase of 14 gallons of usable fuel.

You should contact Harry Dellicker owner of Del-Air at 559-784-9440.

I don't see Del-Air's long range tanks on the FAA's STC listing. Is it a part of his engine change STC or does he do it as a major alteration with a 337/field approval?

Just answered my own question. Looks like he must do it as a field approval using his STC for the C-172 as the basis.
