Yoke Coating

John, It appears that you have an autopilot in the aircraft. What model is it? Was it installed with an STC or just a 337?

Thanks, Larry

Larry,
The auotpilot is a Century I with the optional Omni Tracker. The Century I is currently the only autopilot approved and still manufactured for the Cessna 170 group, it is approved under STC #SA1417SW.

There are a few 170s with more elaborate (S-tec) autopilots that were installed under Field Approvals, however the new FAA guidelines for Field Approvals spacifically say no field approvals for autopilots, thus requiring either certification or at least a one time STC.

The Century I is a nice aide on long trips, it elimates looking up from reading a chart and finding I am in the middle of an Immalman Turn. :P

Powder Coating

Post by schefler »

Since the FAA Yoke emperors do not approve of powder coating yokes, does this mean that you cannot powder coat fuselage frames either?

Powder coating yokes is a no,no? Is this something new? If it is, there are a good many violations out there.

Yep. The only approved coating is Pep Boys auto touch-up paint available in the small spray cans.

In case someone else is interested in having their yokes redone......

Got my yokes back from Power Max coatings in OH. When I opened the first one, I was breathless. Looked great. The second one had several runs on it. Sent it back - no questions asked. They redid the job and it too now looks great. Good people to deal with - they kept me informed of the status throughout, and nice work. Just kinda spendy.
