If the caps are the same as a 140's the answer is, Tuna cans. Buy two small cans of tuna, diameter about the same as the caps. Get an onion and some mayo, chop the onion, mix it up with the tuna and mayo then put it on some bread. Makes a good sandwich. Then wash out the tuna cans nice and dry them out. Hop up on the wheel, or a ladder if you have pants on, squeeze the sides of the open end of the tuna can in a bit then squeeze it the other way just enough to fit over the gas cap nubs. That will keep out water while on the ground and they'll stay on in quite a blow too. I'm told they'll blow off on take-off,so you might not want to put your name on them, and they won't be a big problem if you forget them.

Got that info over at the 140 site and it works really good on my 48 140.

I think mine leak, too.
The first few times I flew the airplane after I bought it I sumped a little water; since it has been hangared continuously for the last 9 months no more water.
My CFI makes fun of the fuel caps - every time I get up there he tells me to be careful not to fall in.

Like any real aircraft mechanic re: his tools, ...it might be a good idea NOT to put your name on 'em.

This is a serious issue more than one rawing has gone down from water getting into the fuel from the gas caps. If you take the caps apart they have an oring in the center and a backup washer to seal the oring. I added an other thin washer to help make a better seal at the oring which. I also replace the small oring in the center to cure my problem. While on thes subject if you find water in a ragwing be very careful as the fuel drains do not do a very good job of getting all the water out. Rock the wings drain the fuel several times at all locations then take a test flight where you do a high approach and slip the plane hard on final and then check again for water. Don"t learn the hard way we have lost too many planes already. The caps are the same as on a C195 not on a C140. Bill K.

"The caps are the same as on a C195 not on a C140."

I am not familiar with the ragwing 170 caps but if the above quote is indeed true, Cessna makes a service kit that replaces the gas cap and flange with the new style red vented cap and a flange that has a raised lip where the cap seals. They do not leak water.

How do you guys get the quotes into the box? I can't figure it out!

And I seriously use tuna cans on my gas caps when I have to park outside to avoid sudden stoppage of the fan.

I dug up a parts catalog and took a look at the gas caps. It's hard to tell what they actually look like, I don't think I've ever seen a 48 170's caps or a 195 for that matter. I thought there might be a fair chance the ragwing caps were similar to the 140. They way they look in the IPC you'd need some kind of a plug shaped cap to fit into and over the cap, probably make it wider than the cap like an umbrella, sorta like a monarch gas cap, to shield the pit the cap is in. That'd probably help a bit. A foam strip running around the perimeter might help keep water from running under the edge of the umbrella on the skin of the wing.

Maybe there's a simpler thing someone is using out there. A canvas strip or tarp wraped around the wing at that point would also shield the cap.

I use pieces of a truck mudflap to cover when outside. Duane had some special covers made to go around the wing wide enough to cover and fasten with the plastic clips as on some backpacks.

The easiest way to get a quote of a post is to click on the "quote" button on the upper right corner of the post you want to quote. This will put all the text from that post in between quote code in brackets [].

Code: Select all

It will look like this [quote]text[/quote] till you post or preview it.
You can then erase what you dont want. Use the preview to see your new post to make sure it's what you want.

Have fun and DON"T quote me. :D

Bruce-
Thanks for the explanation, I must still be doing something wrong, that's what I thought I was doing and it always turns out like this;

As you can see your exact text did generate the white box for me.

Try it again but this time look just under the edit box in the options area and I'll bet you have the "Disable BBCode in this post" box checked. If so uncheck it.

Under the word Options at the left should indicate BBCode is on. This will probably take a new post to show up after unclicking the check box.

Thanks Bruce, I knew there had to be something else I didn't understand, like most computer problems I have. I'll give it another try. George almost had me convinced I needed the gold membership.
