new cowlings?
OK, I searched but couldn't find the old thread. My lower cowling was damaged beyond easy repair, and we (my A&P and I) are having a hard time finding a replacement aluminum cowl. Note it has a few mods for the Franklin engine. He wants to go with a fiberglass replacement. I want to give another shot at finding an aluminum replacement.
Are there shops out there that will do the aluminum work to rebuild or copy and re-manufacture a cowl? I believe there is one in the Mat-Su up here in AK perhaps?

I know of part numbers 0552002-1 &-2 the lower cowl pieces they are used and the exhaust holes have been covered and there are a few small patches. I will check tomarrow to see if there still available. I'm not sure if thats what your looking for but there here in Fairbanks. I'll send you some photos if there still available.

Univair used to carry many of these type airframe parts. Unfortunately, they seem to have discontinued most of them, although they sometimes have pieces laying aroung still in the wharehouse.
If you search online, they will not show up.... but if you call them, they sometimes "find" it in the wharehouse.

Really? I'll admit it has been a while since I checked on their availability. that really stinks. Just making it harder to find parts and keep these birds in the air.gahorn wrote:Univair used to carry many of these type airframe parts. Yes, depending upon which airplane model you are searching for, their old catalogs showed entire fuselage/cabin sections, door-posts, complete cowl-parts/skins, wings, tailfeathers, etc etc. Univair is one of our supporters also, they advertise regularly in the 170 News and Directory.doug8082a wrote:Really? A couple of years ago Univair stopped making many cowl parts for our aircraft because they did not cary an faa pma. As of that time the only part that was certified was the nose bowl, however when I called and spoke with Univair I was told the wheels of the FAA were in motion and they expected certification on many of the old cowl pieces that they previously made in a few years. I have not checked since then and that was problably 2 years ago. I guess the moral is call Univair because they may have started making those parts again. nick

I have a complete 1959 Cessna 172 cowl, as removed from my 1955 Cessna 170B. It is in fair shape. After a great deal of effort over 3 years I acquired original 170B cowl parts to bring my plane back to original configration (almost).
Send me your email address and I can send pictures of the 172 cowl if you are interested. Can cut you a special price.

I have the above mentioned lower cowl pieces, 0552002-1 and 0552002-2 they are used, exhaust holes covered, and some small patches I was going to use them but found a whole lower cowl. Email me if interested in seeing photos, there here in Fairbanks (at Chena Marina, AK28) if you or some one you know wanted to check them out.
