George has been going pretty strong ever since your Orleans tale. You gonna ride in the 170 floatplane to the Texas Christmas Party? One more big log for the fire, See Ya.

Folks,

I grew up in Florida back when it was legal and appropriate to hunt gators and I'll confirm that it would be an all day job for at least three folks to put long underware on a full grown one...and not worth the effort!! And....I don't eat possum.

It appears the VG debate continues with good points from both sides. You're right about landing and not being able to get out with the factory wing, so maybe I should get a "floppy wing whirly bird" instead of VGs. IF...they work (and I can get a 337 to install them on the'48 for $500)....the slower stall speed will also help take off speed and getting out of tight spots too, plus giving more stable slow speed flight, getting the wing flying sooner and taking some of the weight off the gear in rough stuff or deep sand/snow.....Hmmmmmmm maybe I need TWO planes, a git up high go fast twin for trips and a Super Cub for picnics on the beach.....BUT... I like my 170 and I think that approach makes the VGs sound cheap!!!

 HA, long underwear on a gator! My daughter and I have a pet duck Waddles. Megan kept asking if the duck could come in the house, my reply was that the duck was too messey! My girlfriend Squirl got Megan an adult diaper and my ok that with a diaper on, the duck could come into the house for a while. Wish I would have filmed the battle that took place for a few hours between a 12 year old girl and a duck that did not want a diaper on! THE DUCK WON - EASY! My bet is on the gator no matter how many people there are. :D

Having the right equipment for the job always makes it go easier. For that duck maybe you should have used a tampon.
(You'd have to rename that duck probably. "Stomper", maybe?)

George, you are welcome to ask Waddles what HE thinks about a tampon. With the big fight he put up against the diaper, it would be dangerous to walk in to the backyard with a tampon in hand. :D

Back a few years ago when we were flying in to Lakeway there in your neck of the woods fairly often, Waddles was a big hit there at the airport. He usually got a goodbye call on the radio from the friendly folks there. Megan let go of him on short final one time landing at GPM and that was the last time the duck flew with us. A loose duck in the cockpit can make for an interesting time. 8O

Joe, just exactly how did you pry into that duck's personal affairs in order to determine it was a he? Or perhaps a better question is, why did you?

Next time secure the duck with duck tape! Enough duck talk! back to VG's!
From what I've been told by guys who've flown with VG's,the stall speed is (maybe) lowered just an itty bitty. The big thing is that the controls (esp. ailerons) are much more effective and solid-feeling at the slow approach speeds. Of course, part of the stall warning is the increasing mushiness of the controls,so maybe a guy couild get into trouble easier with the VG's without much warning.
Supposedly, the airplane does come off the ground a little quicker, too. Don't know if it's worth the big bucks to put them on. I might consider it if they could be (legally) had cheap enough.

A certain somebody (member of this forum who didn't think I'd post this) emailed me privately and said he wouldn't say it publicly, but if he had to do it all over again he'd spend his money elsewhere.
He said it definitely changed the stall speed. But it had an unanticipated effect. Now the airplane doesn't want to sit down on the ground while in ground effect until the speed is so low that any wind, especially crosswinds, become a handling problem. He said he doesn't have as good contact between his tires and the surface to stop as effectively, with the result that in crosswinds and/or gusty winds and on wet surfaces he uses just as much runway as before. Also, he doesn't think he actually started experimenting at the lower speeds prior to spending a bunch of money on this project, so it's possible that he could have been almost as effective without the mod if he'd practiced more.
The bottom line still is that he doesn't get into/out of strips any shorter than he was willing to try before the mod. 8O

George, poor Waddles was called a she for many years. A duck expert was at the house and wanted to know how old he was. We said "he", and she said yes, Waddles is a he - male Mallards have different tail feathers than females, and she also pointed out that he had a male quack. But, had the expert not come by, we would have found out anyway. That duck can really let it hang out. 8O

By the way, the word carnard is French for duck and wings in the back.

Given it back to Eric and his important stuff.

Still around and entertaining the neighbors. We still hear brakes when people do double takes when they see the duck, dog, and cat playing together in the front yard and temporarily forget they were driving.

Don't know about the pinfeathers - BUT, if you duct-taped the feet of enough ducks in the proper locations to the wings on a ragwing, and the ducks were properly trained, you could beat the performance of VG's.
That would not be called vortex generators though, maybe hover quackers :?:

I can tell you guys that in the case of my Super Cub, VG's were the greatest modification you can make to it for the money. Much more predictable stall (no power off stall), flys at zero indicated airspeed (ok, the angle of attack effects the ol' pitot a bit), and will automatically un-spin itself. It really greatly improves the safety of the bird in my opinion, and it flys like a dream.

It may be that the same mod is not as effective on a 170?

hover quackers

Post by russ murri »

I must admit that the journey from vortex generators to hover quackers has been one to keep my wife and I laughing for the past couple of nights. I have to wonder about some of you. I do live on a lake and have lots of ducks. Some time back there was a post about getting bugs off the wings with this spray stuff. The visual of 16 ducks per wing in action at both ends, better buy that stuff buy the case. thanks Russ and Cherryl

Hi Russ, Gary and I are normal! George is not, because he has more answers than all of us have questions!

Sure envy you living on a lake with alot of ducks, would like to do that.
