Pull Type starter maintenance

Post by funseventy »

I am looking for a supplier for the seal that goes around the manual bendix. I got a part number off of the seal, but of course that is the manufacturers part number and no aircraft supplier recognizes it. I'm sure all of us deal with the leaking starters so you'll know what I'm looking for. Thanks, Kelly

Take the old starter plunger seal out and take it to a bearing house and ask them to match it
DON"T TELL THEM IT IS FOR AN AIRPLANE!
Tell them it is for a tractor or a combine or something.

I have a note in my C-145 parts catalog that the starter clutch (pinion) seal is a Chicago rawhide p/n 9859,also Napa p/n 9858.

I am a firm believer in use what works, BUT don't make an entry in your logs using that part number.

I did the ole tractor starter routine with my old leaky starter a few years ago. It worked better after that. Now, after an engine overhaul I have the light weight B&N starter. It is push button and works terrifically. It turns over very nicely, heck I think I could taxi with it.

Tell us more about the B&C starter. What do they cost? Easy installation? What's involved? I seem to recall that you have to cut off a shaft or something in the accessory case, easily done at overhaul time but maybe not so easily later.
I overhauled my engine a couple years ago,but decided to just stick with the stock pull-start arrangement.

Aerotech of Louiseville services these starters and has all the parts. I ordered the oil seal you are looking for and a new bushing for the bendix and it was quite reasonable. Don't forget ot order a new gasket! Check their website on line for their 1-800 number. I have found them to be most helpfull on both occasions I delt wiht them. Good luck.

I got my starter clutch from Niagra Air Parts 800-565-4268. they are also very helpful. they unofficially provided me with the C.R. & Napa part numbers.
By the way,you might want to check your starter clutch out. I had one fail on an O-200 several years ago and the remains of the needle bearings went down into the access. case & the oil sump. A real bummer!
The starter clutch for our pull start is different from that of the key start like on my O-200,ours is only "clutching" between the engine starting & release of the pull starter so I would think it's service life is much longer, but if it lets go the results will be the same. The new starter clutch was only $155 2 years ago, I considered it cheap insurance for my new engine. The old one made a funny noise on release that the new one didn't make.So listen close.....
