you can see that the pants that i have now
(avatar pic)
are different from the ones in the 'flying' pic above.
so they are not original.
the previous owner paid a lot for them,
so i suppose i should keep them
for the next guy (or gal)

The ones in your avatar are the beautiful "original" style. The ones in the photo are the pointy-types used on later Cessnas, usually made of fiberglass, and are the best reason I can think of to take 'em off a 170. IMHO

Pants are nice, but big tires look great AND are more practical on rough strips.

Hey, Dave! OT. What are the chances the DDS named Ahrens I see in Grapevine, TX is related to you?

george
lots of Ahrens'
don't this one!

guess i'll leave pants on,
but if i take them off,
will keep em.

BTW, can the owner do this
or does a mechanic have to do it?
legally, that is

Just don't sell them. they run around $2,000 - $2,500 these days for a pair in good to exellent condition. Even if you decide you don't want them, keep them with the plane.

The owner may remove the wheel pants under preventive maintenance rules of FAR 43, Appdx A. But..... BUT.....the mounting hardware (backing plates, axle removal replacement, etc.) will have to be performed under the direct supervision of an A&P and logged, and the equipment list updated.

Having said that, I also would suggest that now is the time to inspect the axle mounting bolts, the lower gearleg axle-mount holes, consider whether you want/need solid or steel axles, tow lugs, etc. That's the legal answer.

I realized that I don't have a current picture of 58D polished but if you dim the lights and squint real hard you can almost imagine it polished

These are with the 6.00 tires but I now have the 8.50 tires on it now with the skis. When I take the skis off this spring I will take a better picture and post it.

That's what polished looks like! I guess I have more work to do
Nice looking scheme! I hope to add some paint when the funds allow.

I don't know the owner. I just got the pic off of http://www.popularaviation.com There's a fair number of 170 pics in the 170 section.

tires vs. wheelpants

Post by HMA170 »

That C170A (N9125A) has 6.00 tires and lives in Idaho. Larger tires may be in it's future. Lots of beautiful backcountry to see up here. One complete polish a year and then just touch-ups.
