Fuselage logo and tail design decal

Jerry Terlisner TIC170 board member just asked in an email if there are any vendors who offer decals of the 170 found in front of the door post and the design found on the tail for a '50 A model.
I know from another post that blue prints from Cessna are available but apparently he's looking for decals.
He says his paint is drying as we speak. Can anyone help with info?

I believe Moody Aero-Graphics has them in vinyl as well as paint masks. They don't show up on their online catalog, but if you order the paper catalog I think you will find them there. http://www.moodyaero.com/

If necessary, I could check with the paint shop that did '82A. They had a stencil for the logo on the tail. It's the same for all models, so it would be applicable. While you may see 170s with a tail logo specific to the model (i.e. 170, 170A, 170B), that's not correct as Cessna never actually indicated the model of 170 in their graphics.

I beg to differ. My 170, which Dad & I picked up new in Whichita in 1950, had "170" in the winged thing on the tail logo. I can't vouch for other years. When I polished and repainted the red, I created a stencil to make the complete logo. I used sticky shelf paper, and cut it with an X-Acto knife, stuck it on the fin, and painted. I think I should clarify my statement. What I meant by Cessna not indicating the model of 170 in the graphic is that it never said anything except "170". In other words, the tail or fuselage logo from Cessna never said "170A" or "170B" as you see sometimes in the graphics from the aftermarket companies. Regardless of what model 170 you own, any graphics on the aircraft that indicated the model always stated just "170" or "One Seventy". - no "A" or "B" was ever present in the original factory lettering.bsdunek wrote:I beg to differ. I had the local sign shop trace the original shadows of the tail # and 170 located on the tail and the masks for designs under the propeller on my rag wing. I know he still has them on his computer if someone is interested please PM me and I will pass his phone # along. Beware his work is as professional as it gets and his price will reflect that. He spent a lot of time doing the cad work on them and he can cut either positive or negative masks for painting or decals with his machine. Bill K

As I remember the cost was about $60 a couple of years ago at MoodyAero for all required paint masks or vinyl for my plane. I think they have every logo Cessna ever made in their catalog. They didn't have it broken down by serial number or year, so you have to know what you are looking for. Mine matched perfectly the original paint that was on the plane.
If you don't know how your plane came from the factory search eBay for "Cessna 170" and look for ads for your year. They have new ones almost every day.

tail design decal -- was it black?
I found a black Cessna 170 decal available on eBay. Were the original "170" decals on the tail black? (My tail is white, not completely an original paint scheme because it lacks the "fish mouth" -- I think the black "170" decal will look fine but just wondered if it was black leaving the factory?)

I believe all logos were painted in the same color as the trim paint. (They weren't "decals" but were stenciled.)

I was going to use a decal, but I decided to also paint the logo and other items, so I gave all the scans to a sign shop to have masks made of them. It wound up costing about 170 dollars for double set of masks which included n# nose bowl logos and side post
heres the tail

Now if you have your own x,y plotter like a craft robo pro you can make your own.
I may pick one up if we keep running in to need to have stencils masks ect made.
I have at times found colored cessna logos on ebay, I picked up a set in red but didn't use them

Hey I have one of those. It's my wifes actually (but she doesn't know how to use it) and it's the smaller model. Big enough for the 170 stuff we might need. I might have to go into the stencil business.
