pics of what the new
RV light sport plane
will look like?
it is supposed to be out
the end of this year.

i checked with my life ins man
about building and flying an experimental plane.
the original contract stated that i can fly.
nothing about what type,
so i'm okay!!
but i guess that over the past 10-15 years,
due to the increased of homebuilts,
the policies have this included.
i got in before all this started.
i feel lucky

i talked with some guys building a j-3 replica at boone airport.
was interesting to talk to them about liability.
a homebuilt has the same statute of limitations
that a factory aircraft has; 18 years.
i asked the fellow what he thot of this.
he laughed and said he was 70 years old
and didn't worry about it.
his kids will tho.
i'm kinda hung up about this liability issue, forgive me.
its been a rule of thumb with me,
it one has anything to loose, don't fly skydivers
and don't ever sell a plane that you built yourself to someone else!
what do you think of this?

well....i din't exactly mean it that way.
i just what to build a little safe airplane.
a j-3 seems logical as:

they can 'almost' kill you
they qualify for LSA
i can make it an L-4 as i like military vehicles
it would fulfill a life long passion

it seems that most here don't worry about things like these
but when your medical becomes 'if'ie'
and you still want to fly, it will.

If you guys like L-4s then you would like "Janey, a Little Plane In a Big War" by Schultz, and "Low and Slow" by Don Moore. Good reads.

Dave, I think the J3 is a little more dangerous than you think. It will just "barely" kill you. :lol:

your right, but...
in comparison to rocket travel, skydiving ect.
a J3 is pretty harmless.
everything is dangerous
but if one, as Bob Hoover says,
"know the limitations of your plane and yourself
and never exceed both"
you'll be okay.

i just don't want to think like John King in flying
who thinks all small planes are dangerous.

Iowa, I know what you mean. I remember years ago a King air 300 flew into our little airport and the young copilot was going on about how scary those "little" airplanes were. The ink could not have been dry on his ticket. In truth he was just trying to impress my girl friend. Didn't work though, we've been married for 19 yrs and three airplanes. :)

A few years ago there was a nice little story about flying a J3 in one of the popular aviation magazines (I think by Bud Davison). It was about how the J3 will not let you take yourself too seriously. The gist of it was that no one ever gets out of a J3 that isn't smiling! That is how I feel about my 170.... no matter how crappy my last landing, I am always smiling when I pull up to the hangar! :D

i remember the time when my dad was just taking lessons
and was all worried about making his 1st x-country.
i told him we would make one, and i would let him
do all the navigating from a sectional only.
we landed in iowa city and pulled up next to a lear jet!!
the pilot came over and was checking out our 1946 C-140.
dad apologized for our plane leaking oil,
as he was obviouly star truck by the gleaming jet.
to our surprise, the pilot simply stated
"oh, the lear leaks some also,
I may fly lears for money, but my personal plane
is a J3 cub and it leaks oil and a few other things"
my dad was amazed and from that time on
never underestimated the value or love that pilots
have for these old planes.
