170A Rudder

Post by djbaker »

I have found a crack in my rudder spar a 1949 170A serial #19080. Will a rudder off a B model fit as a replacement?

Yes, but if you remove it from George's B model, your A might slow down. The A and B rudders are perfectly interchangeable.

 Boy, was I double shocked this evening! Had ordered well over a $100 worth of stuff from Aircraft Spruce and had been tracking UPS's tracking on the computer and was very hopeful that it would show up today. Also, it was very possible that the upper and lower rudder skins could arrive today too. At every street sound - car, motorcycle, bicycle, skate board, truck, etc - I was out the front door looking to see if it was the UPS truck, it is so much fun to get aircraft stuff. Finally the UPS truck pulled up and I quit wearing out the hinges on the front door about 6:00. I was expecting a BIG box from Aircraft Spruce - 68 oz jug of Novus, 9 feet of baffle seal, 15 feet of anti-chafe tape, rivits, tailwheel spacers & grease retainers, etc. I was expecting a HUGE box with the upper and lower rudder skins. She, the UPS driver, carried these two boxes up to the house. Uhhmmm, must both be from Aircraft Spruce and they had to back order most of it, that bigger box must have the big jug of cleaner, what's in the little box I wondered to myself as she handed them to me. "Do you have a huge flat box for me in that truck" I was almost crying. She explained that she arranged her truck for each stop and that was all that was coming to this house. Checked the label and the little box was from Aircraft Spruce and the other box was from the rudder skin company. Oh no, he must have misunderstood me, I was thinking as I carried them in to the living room. Certainly, the rudder skins would be in a very large flat box, what in the world could he have sent me instead of the rudder skins? I was very careful cutting the tape, and opened it up to find rolled up rudder skins - WOW. They look GREAT, very happy, could almost envision them turning in to a rudder. Now, for that little box and to find out what had not been sent. Opened it up to find everything that was ordered in there - reminded me of asking for $5 of gas in the '70's one time at a gas station and the attendant belched in my face. $100+ just isn't much any more is it.
