West Yellowstone

Anyone ever flown into West Yellowstone from the southwest? Planning a trip this summer. Any reports on the airport or the general area would be appreciated.

Easy airport to get in and out of during the summer, with some commuter traffic, closed in winter. Stop by Driggs (KDIJ) on your way. We're about 30min south on the western slope of the Tetons. We have arestaurant plus a warbird museum.

West Yellowstone, also has a campground located on the field and used to have a good Mexican restaurant in the terminal building. They have a car rental place in the terminal or you could walk into town in about 30 minutes or so.

The field gets a very high density altitude in the summer, early morning late evening arrivals/departures are the best. The best way in from the south west is perhaps from the Island Park Area. Follow the road up from Ashton Idaho up over the calderia rim then follow it past the dirt strip then over the ridge into the airport. West Yellowstone sits in a wide open valley. The mountains around the field can get some rough air in the afternoon and there can be a nice crosswind at times. I would not go into West Yellowstone near gross - perhaps keeping max weight at around 2000 lbs in a standard 170; seemed to work well for us in the Idaho mountains.

The Mexican Restaurant was good while it was open. Things started to go downhill in West Yellowstone when the MacDonalds opened.

Yes it was good. Fun to fly up for dinner. There is also a grass strip to the west called Henry's Lake. Check DA.

Looooooong walk into town. Some hitch, some bring their bikes, some catch a taxi.

Last year the restaurant was being run by the FBO and was serving Italian food. I was in a hurry and didn't eat so no review

If you are interested in a more rustic camping experience the night before/after near an airstrip, try Henry's Lake State Park only a few clicks to the southwest just over the line in Idaho. IMHO better than the camping on the field at KWYS. The airstrip (U53) is marked on the sectional and is in Airnav.
