Factory Sound Deadener

Post by mike roe »

I have removed the two floor panels under the front and rear seats.I am removing the factory spray on sound deadener.Should I replace it with another type.I am considering cleaning it off of the aft fuselage section also.Does it actually do anything.Has anyone removed it completly thru the airframe and flown without it.Any thoughts?

Sound deadener

Post by BVRAIR »

Mike,

I just removed the factory sound deadener from my 170. Wow what a job. Used paint stripper. I'm down to a hollow tube for a airframe (fire wall, panel, cables, wiring and floor boards are out) so will cover the entire inside of fuselage with Boeing two part epoxy primer and will not replace sound deadener. How did the battery box work out?

I havnt gotten to the engine compartment, but the battery box will be great.I have used MEK with a fresh air scource resperator to remove the black sound deadener.I am hoping someone has removed it and flown without anything in the aft fuselage and noticed if it is louder in any way.I wasnt going to put anything as far as primer back on.I will keep it fogged with a anti corrosion treatment.
I pulled the floors to replace all cables and pulleys. It makes things alot easier. And clean 55 years of gunk. Also I will remove and O/H the fuel selector while I have the floors out.
Thanks for the info

Mike - My 52 170B has no sound proofing in the aft fuselage - behind the baggage compartment - it is all bare metal. I have not noticed the aircraft to be any louder than 172s or 182s I have flown.

Thanks Robert, thats what I am being told.I talked to a tech at Air Repair. When they do a L-19 they remove it also. Some say it hides corrosion, though I have not seen that.
Thanks
