Installing new 8" horns

Looks like the orifice inserts in the draft tubes of my horns have had it, I used a slow dremil to clean out the flaked paint and corrosion and there were obvious irregularities. One had a diameter of 622 thousandths and one 582. Do not know what the factory number is but both look worn out. I am short on vacuum for my conversion to modern gyros as I can not maintain greater than four inches above 5000 feet or air speeds below 100 mph (FYI it is just like Cleo B said it would be). So I am going to install two new 8-inch venturis. The question is what is the best location. I have seen them over and under, on opposite sides and on the bottom of the aircraft. Any thoughts on the pro and con of the choices??

For the humor value, :lol: with mine on the passenger side, there are lots of opportunities to reply to the question " what's that horn doing there for?"

I tell my passengers that bush pilots use them to keep deer off the runways :D I even had a kid studying for his A&P believing me :lol: He asked why there was a small tube inside the big tube. I told him that someone figured out that animals respond to different frequencies, so the small one is for deer and the big one is for moose. :lol:

Good one,Doug--I gotta remember that one!
With regards to location of new venturi's,unless there was a good reason not to,I'd mount them right where the old ones were. No new mounting holes to drill,and no old ones to patch!

Help yourself Joe :D Embellish all you want. It's one of those things that you can get a lot of mileage out of when you thouw in some pseudo-technical mumbo-jumbo. The kid going for his A&P was a riot. He'd wander around the shop talking to the other mechanics....
"Hey, did you know that guy with the taildragger has a Deer Horn on his plane?"
"A what?"
"A deer horn. Bush pilots use 'em to keep the runways clear."
"Really?"
"Yeah, come check this thing out."
We had him going for hours :lol:

When I worked as a line guy we had a desk girl convinced that the venturi was a horn and that she should put her lips on it and blow. The bad part was it was a small venturi on the bottom of a Merlin IIB. That means it was attached to the relief tube!!! We stopped her when she was close enough to doing it that is was funny.
