I am getting close to finishing and then flying my 1952 170b. When I bought the aircraft it had a 337 to install the O300D engine, but now during the importation certification for importing it into Canada, the MD
( Minister's delegate), says he can find no prior Canadian approvals to install a O300D into a 170B. I am very certian there must be several dozen 170B with O300D in Canada flying.Does anyone in Canada have any paperwork / doucementation they can please share with me?
John, there are two ways to do this. 1) the association now has the STC for the installation ofthe O-300-C, D, and E engines in the Cessna 170 series aircraft, available from Jan at hdqts. 2) I have the form 337 from Robert Irwin's Canadian registered plane when he did that installation in Canada I can send you. probably the STC might be qiute a bit easier since it will cover you anywhere. Thanks for the reply.If you could please forward the supporting paperwork you have that would be great.I think the more paper work supporting this , the easier it will be.( Can you email, or fax me ,please email me ( johnatkins@rogers.com) and I will send you my contact numbers.) Also if you want any thing for this please let me know.I will contact the Association this morning, about buying the STC. Do you know ,if when the Association sells the STC they include the permission letter ?
When you buy the STC you get the permission to use the STC on one aircraft.
Buying and using the STC means an IA has to inspected your installation to insure it follows the STC. If not he will have to "fix" it. Then he fills out and files the paperwork and the CAA will be satisfied.
Going the route of finding other approved 337s on Canadian aircraft guarantees nothing.
The STC is very reasonable priced and will add more value to your airplane as it will offer more options than just the 337 route. For example what approval do you have to use your propeller or spinner on that 0300D. Maybe none and the CAA hasn't found that YET. The STC covers these things.
