The last *new* major road I can think of would be the Parks Highway, connecting Wasilla to Fairbanks, and that was done sometime in the 50's I believe.

Seems strange that its been so long since any major new routes were made... And I work for the DOT ! 8O But Im in Anchorage, so I cant speak for the Fairbanks/Northern Region area.

Anchorage is surrounded by Military land, Park land, and water... Not the best scenario for future development. And the "Bridge to Nowhere"... Well, dont get me started on that ! :D

Wasn't it our last governor, Murkowski, who wanted to build a road from Nenana to Nome? Now that would open up some remote land to development! Not to mention use up all the permanent fund in the process.

You dont even want to know some of the "ideas" that get thrown around for where/why to build roads... And Im not even very far up on the pecking order, so Im sure there are many that dont even make it as far as my desk.

Murkowski definitely had some "bold" ideas as far as transportation.
