Thanks Miles and Bruce!

I'll probably try to fabricate some covers similar to the picture, but I sure don't like the idea of blocking any of the cabin or carb heat inlets. If its cold enough to need less cooling air for the engine, then I need more heated air for the cabin!

I followed the suggestion regarding the use of Duct tape to improve the engine oil temps. Worked great - oil temp got up to 180 and stayed there for the entire flight - OAT was 40-45. Great forum - thanks.

My father made the following cover which can be installed or removed by loosening the two screws and sliding the cover to the side. It looks like a factory part although it only helps a little.

Another cover I've seen used oil sump cooling air hole in the nose bowl is a metal inspection hole cover with a holding spring on the back, such as is used on the under side of fabric covered wings.
