Elevator bellcrank bracket

Post by james_layman »

Learned recently both elevator bellcrank brackets on my '49, 170A, SN 19095 were pretty messed up. Was able to find the left bracket but little luck with the right.

While researching the problem I noticed the brackets, on at least the early 172s were much more substantial and were probably up designed to counter problems with the smaller 170 brackets.

Before I have my A&P manufacture a new right bracket based upon specs I got today from Cessna is there anyway to substitute (legally) the brackets from the 172?

I don't think they are the same. The 170 has a pushpull tube from a bellcrank to the arm on the elevators. The 172 has cables all the way to a arms on the elevators; no bellcrank, no brackets.

Bellcrank bracket

Thought my idea was too simple a solution, after all this is an airplane we are talking about! Only had an early 172 parts book to go by anyway.

Still need that spare right hand side bracket someone has stashed!

Need the 0510143 or 0510143-1 for the right side.

Was able to come by the left (42-1) from Jim Mcintosh in Vancouver BC

Oh and this is where the bracket cracks
Hopefully yours isn't but as always be prepared if you look.

This is what the whole thing looks like

ç. There's a left and right and both tend to crack at the top rivet hole. This one was pulled from mine and although the repair looks well cherry rivets really, it has stood the test of time

Thanks for the pics. Well help if we have to repair. Have a lead on a recent salvage 170. Hope to hear soon.
