That off-color door just adds points to your "Rat Catagory" score.
Yeah Richard, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I sure don't need the outside to start looking like the interior. I've made Dick an offer, and if he accepts, I'll have to see how much my AI will let me do. He also has a paint booth, and maybe he can put a "25-foot" paint job on the door. (Also need to permanently patch the cowling where the old exhaust came out.)

Miles , go ahead and do it, you overhauled your engine and this mod is not near as bad as doing that. The worst part is making that first cut. After that, you have to finish it. I did mine back in 1984 when the feds were more field approval friendly. It also helped that Randy Martin (FAA inspector and 170 driver)was around to do the approvals. The template that Ron has would help tremendously. I measured several airplanes back then, from the door post back and from the tail forward and from the rivit lines top and bottom . As I remember there were slight differences. But then you just grit your teeth and do it. I have had no problems over the years and lord knows traveling with three females I was overloaded most of the time and have made some horrific landings and it still held together. As far as I'm concerned, it is the best mod you can do to your plane. And.....we can get just as much crap in there much easier than crawling over the back seat.
Ed you went and pushed me over the edge! Today I received my baggage door from blueldr. I haven't talked to DelAir about the STC yet, but I have a few questions:
1)The door came with what appear to be what's left of two fuselage bulkeads of the airplane it came out of (they're sawed off outside the perimeter of the door). The hinge mounts are riveted to one of these two bulkhead parts. Will I move the hinge mounts to my bulkhead, or do the bulkheads get modified and used as doublers of some sort?
2)Also, the door came without hinge pins. What get's used here? Dick suggested tight fitting cotter pins, but I wonder if there is a specific part that should be used.
Thanks, Miles

Miles, you probably misunderstood Dick... he said "tight codger pins".

Miles, you move the hinge mounts to your bulk head and cut the rectangular holes in your bulkhead. send me your email add and i'll send you Del Airs instructions for the installation. Lance

The specified part is a Clevis Pin, PN MS20392-1-49 and held by a cotter, MS 24665-132. Hope that helps.
I found out an interesting tidbit today. The early 172's did not have a baggage door either. The baggage door was not installed in 100 series Cessna's (according to Lucky at Aircraft Salvage in Lancaster) until about 1960 when the 175 series came out, and they needed to relocate the battery to the rear fuselage and provide a way to access the battery. Then it was added to all the other 100 series. The Cessna IPC's I have seem to confirm this.
Harry Dellicker now gets $250 for his bag door mod, and he claims it takes 15-25 hours to install, depending upon experience and paint. Here's two pics Lance Watkins shared showing his installation.

What are your plans for covers for your Atlee Dodge seats?
I had my covers made by Fine Line Interiors in Anchorage and are very pleased. The covers snap on / off for easy storage. The kids complain a little less now.
