BAS pull handle location

Post by mongo2 »

While I have the tail and fuselage completely open, I would like to install the BAS pull handle I have. Is the approx. location that they give on the paperwork close (28" fwd of the horiz. stab L.E. and 6" up from the lower skin splice line), as I don't have any pulleys and cables installed at this time. It would be easier to install now, but I dont want to rivet the handle in and then find out I'm too close to the cables when I install them.

Rick,

I just finished installing them during my annual. Not a big deal at all. You will find the directions are very close to the actual install location.

What you need to do is crawl into the back with the unit and a fine point sharpie marker. Adjust the location based upon the pre set angles and the top / forward markings on the unit and make a small tick mark on the aluminum skin and the unit. You will be well above the cables.

You may have to clean the aluminum first as I did, then prepair to get inside with your drill, light and clekos...

It took me 4 1/4 hours including a coffee break - it would have been easier with a second person.

One hint, make up some primer and before final install, prime the flanges
and the aluminum under them before final rivets.

Did you know the tail-pull handles were standard fare on an L-19? (not an STC) Just an interesting observation.

Kyle,
Thanks for the info. Sounds like if I place it in the measured location, I will be ok once the cables are installed. Like I said, it is wide open and I can access the area without climbing in the tail, as the aft bulkheads are out, but either way is accessible.

George,
Yes , I did see the pull handle in the Air Repair IPC as original equip for the L-19. I couldnt locate the part # other than from BAS as their STC.

Woychik Lifting Handles

Post by n2582d »

Several years ago I contacted Wochik's widow, Doris, to see if these handles or plans for them were available. They wern't for sale and she wasn't interested in selling any plans. I did get a brochure about the lifting handles and nice letter from her about her husband, Raymond. Apparently he was quite the inventer. Anyone out there have Woychik handles on their plane?

Woychik retractable lifting handles are approved for the 170. See item 611 of the TCDS. This item has an asterik next to it which means "that approval has been obtained by someone other than the aircraft manufacturer. An item marked with an asterisk may not have been manufactured under a FAA monitored or approved quality control system, and therefore conformity must be determined if the item is not identified by a Form ACA-186, PMA, or other evidence of FAA production approval."

The L-19 tail pull handles don't stick out as far as the BAS handles do.
