48 Ragwing tank neck

Post by n3833v »

I have a leaking neck on my tank . The Parts breakdown shows multiple gaskets, it doesn't seem to have gaskets. I want to look with a mirror inside to see what I can see. The top fabric ring seems to screw into tank flange. Anyone had a left tank out and remember how the neck is?

John if they are the same as later A and B tanks you can easily cut your own gaskets. I have paper templates I can email you to print and use.

I'm going to have a friend use a borescope to see if the tank is cracked or what might have happened. The neck looks to be solid on the tank. Thanks and I will check with you later.

The tanks and caps are very different from A/B tanks. They are essentially C-120/140 tanks. Unfortunately, there were at least two different types of tanks installed in 120/140 aircraft. The earlier type had six mounting screws in the neck adaptor which are prone to leak. They had rubber gaskets, little rubber washers, that would leak. Tightening the screws may solve the problem on that type. Otherwise, I don't believe there were any gaskets on the original fabric wing aircraft.

The later, all-metal 140A had a neck which screwed down/into the tank similar to the 170A/B aircraft, and also had gaskets, of course. I don't believe this was the tank used on the 170.

I've just exhausted my slim knowlege on that subject.

Do you have a standard filler neck, or has it been moded? My tanks have a filler neck welded to a plate that screws down on to the tank with the wing fabric in between with a healthy helping of polysulfied sealant. Not my doing, donsn't leak, no water gets in, not gonna touch it.

Original Rawing caps are not like A or B model caps or for that matter like 140 caps they are simlar or the same as 195 caps. The tanks are 140 tanks with different fittings welded to them. Bill K
