After straining my brain for a few weeks trying to decide on what to do regarding replacement of my broken tachometer, I finally bit the bullet and bought one of the Horizon P-1000 units. A rediculous price to pay for something to tell you how fast the engine is turning, but alas it also provides other data as Richard and others pointed our. I spent quite a while Sat. along with a good friend's assistance, getting it installed. Actually if all one had to do was install it the chore wouldn't be bad, but you know how it is when you start on a project like that, you find 3-4 other things that have to be corrected or fixed before the task at hand can be accomplished. When I design my super-duper airplane it is not going to require being a contorshionist (sp) to get under the instrument panel

I have sore places that I forgot could get sore

Anyway, its in, it works and it has a lot of pretty lights to keep one busy

Now I have to figure out how to use the vrs features. Looking for an electrical engineer to volunteer their time to guide me
While under the instrument panel, and seeing all that rats nest of old wiring and some new that is in question regarding being done correctly, I saw something I had noticed before, but can't identify and I thought some of you more knowledgable folks could clear it up for me. On the cross brace, that supports the instrument panel (actually the sub panel on my plane), there is a factory installed (riveted in place) bracket to which is bolted some kind of electrical item with vrs wires going to it. It appears to be bakelite or plastic and has Klaxton on it. I don't find it in my C-172 parts book. I suspect it may be some kind of a circuit breaker, but don't recall anyone making reference to such previously. I would suspect the later model C-170's have the same item. What is it and what is its function
