Looking for 180 main gear (split from MX Library)
I'm looking for a set of C-180 gear legs to replace my original 1952 C-170 gear legs. Anyone have any ideas where I should search? Answer by email if possible.
Thanks.

Ordinarily, this question would not be properly placed in the MX Library where resource information is located, so it's been split off into this location. This topic would normally be placed in The TradeMart where 170 Assn. members only are allowed to advertise (free) for items Wanted, or For Sale, but where anyone (member or not) may peruse and reply.
We hope that by allowing your message to remain you'll consider joining. Anyone able to help Bob out? (I'd refer him to Steve Knopp at http://www.pponk.com )

Re: Looking for 180 main gear (split from MX Library)
What year and what part number C-180 are you looking for? There are several numbers, forward or aft gear?
Early Cessna 180 Gear (also used on C-170’s) P/N 0741001-1, 0741001-2, 0741001-3 & 0741001-4
1. 1 & –3 are LH, & –2 & –4 are RH.
2. A dimple is used to support the brake clip.
3. The gear has a straight leading edge facing forward.
4. The thickness is 11/16†but varies from .665 to .685
5. The inside dimension from the center of the upper bend to the narrow end is approx. 36â€.
6. The narrowest point of the gear measured just above the axle boss is 1 7/8â€
7. On the –1 & –2 the gear comes straight out and down to the axle attach on a straight line, also referred to as wheels aft.
8. On the –3 & –4 the gear comes out angled forward and down to the axle approx. 2-3†as compared to the –1 & –2
gear legs, also referred to as wheels forward.

Delair in Porterville, CA has new 180 legs in stock. I believe Harry would sell them. 559 784 9440.

You'd better have CASH if you deal with Harry. No credit cards. No COD. No hurry, either. In a project I've got underway now, he was overnight expressed a Cashier's Check for an express shipment. He took his time and shipped two days later. Who knows what method he shipped it. It's yet to arrive. Apparently he doesn't understand that if he's sent cash via express, that perhaps the payee might want it NOW,.... not next week.voorheesh wrote:Delair in Porterville, CA has new 180 legs in stock. George, there has been a number of warnings on various internet sites about a rash of bogus casniers checks. They're deposited and then bounce after a few business days. Maybe Harry is being extra cautious. I've always had excellent service from him, but,of course, I have always sent him my personal check and I'm sure that instills confidence.

Ha!
That's why you'd figure he'd take a wire transfer, credit-card, P.O. order, or C.O.D., in my opinion. It's just curious why he'd not. I'm not down on Harry, and he's a fine fellow. I'm just puzzled at how someone who's been in business so long does it that way. (Maybe that's why he's been in business so long?)

He's avoiding the credit card operating expense that's passed / built into the price of everything we buy. Hopefully that savings is passed on to the consumer, the only protection we have is the retailer's interest in serving their customers in a honest fashion. As an example the price of gas did not change at Costco either before or after the weekends storm (IKE) whereas every other retail gas station hiked the price, some even before the storm hit. Don't mean to steel
the tread, so with the price of fuel increasing should'nt we be looking at lowering the overall weight of the plane (sticking with the factory gear) and reducing drag?

There's no credit card expense associated with a wire transfer or C.O.D.

I can't comment on the other payment methods as I really don't know the ins and outs of those options but I'd be surprised if they didn't want a piece of the action. Seems like "fees" pop up everywhere. Like the ball cap says "Money talks- and you know what walks"

Re: Looking for 180 main gear (split from MX Library)
It's not a big deal. I like Harry and we went ahead and overnight expressed payment to him.
By definition, we'd have absorbed any C.O.D. fees at our end in order to get the item quickly. But no, he won't ship C.O.D. either. Cash, personal check (I'll bet a real delay occurs there), or cashier's check (his preference.) My point is: Do not plan on express shipping from Harry. He won't be hurried, so don't ground your plane and have workers standing around waiting for Harry's parts or you'll be disappointed in how long it takes to get what you pay for.

Re: Looking for 180 main gear (split from MX Library)
The best way to deal with Delair is to show up in person (hard to do if you don't live in CA) and then be prepared to listen for awhile. Harry likes to talk. His mechanic Chris is great. He welded a new sump drain in my right tank last month and did a great job. I drove it in and they made time for me to get it done the same day. I am still waiting for the bill and return to service sign off and I have no idea what the cost will be. They have alot of fuel tanks and related parts in stock. Harry thinks all this stuff is as scarce as hen's teeth so it isn't cheap. All that said, Harry is a great guy and he and Chris know the 170s.

Re: Looking for 180 main gear (split from MX Library)
I have done business with Harry many times, yes Harry likes to talk, but he is VERY free with his information, and it is sometimes hard to get him off the phone, but I respect his knowledge, and his willingness to share all those years of experience with you, as opposed to a guy in Washington (recently divorced) who will not even talk to you on the phone without first charging you to talk to him!
When I was on the phone with Harry trying to solve my gear problem he talked for almost 40 minutes about Cessna gear legs.
We need MORE like Harry in the aviation industry, if we did maybe flying would be more popular.
