A while back somebody mentioned a thin-wall open end wrench from Snap-On that worked good for the oil screen. Could somebody confirm if this is the beast (or a suitable substitute): http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp ... ir=catalog
It is 1", right? I should remember this after growing up with a 140 and almost 4 years of 170 ownership. Just thought I'd verify before I drop $25.

Someone once told me these were called a "Ford wrench" ........I have 2 of them in my tool box ...don't use them for a wrench however they do work well for a hammer

The current model made by Rigid works very well for most large size applications.

A cold chisel and a ball peen hammer are my favorite tools for this job. A screen assembly will, with care, last about six oil changes. You save one screen cleaning on the sixth since you're throwing the screen away anyhow.
The oil screen is 1". I made a square deep socket by welding old socket for the ratchet end and 1" inside square steel tubing for the nut end, together. I had made this tool to torque my F&M oil filter adapter but it works great on my Cub which still has an oil screen, Won't easily round the square brass nut,

you guys make this too hard. I use my trusty 1" Craftsman open end wrench, although once I remove my oil temp bulb I can often remove the screen by wrenching on the bulb adaptor, since it is really in there tightly. But I use the 1" to make sure I'm tight going back together. You just have to be careful to keep it on straight, go slow and easy. And use a new crush gasket every time, so that you don't have to try to rip the accessory case threads out tryoing to get it tight enough not to leak.

Unless this is a special thin walled one, it is the same "Mexican Toolbox" that I've been using. Problem is my OP adapter is not aligned with the sides of the square nut so I can't get a good grip on it. I think I'll try that one from Snap On and see how it goes.
