170A Outboard Wing Section Repair
Hi All-I have a wing which has some groundloop damage. Damage is only in the outboard 18" of wing. On inspection it appears to be only the leading edge, upper and lower skins and the Main Spar Extensions there and outermost rib. I used to see a sort of "repair kit"for this situation back in one of the parts com0pany catalgues but no longer. Anyone know a source for the bits I am describing? It is almost like Cessna designed this outboard end to be a "crumple zone" and maybe for good reason. Cheers/Wallace

Re: 170A Outboard Wing Section Repair
Its a usual question, but we usually need more information, having said that I can only tell you what I would do. When I need parts I have my favorite suppliers depending on cost and time frame involved. As an example if its a straight forward piece I will manufacture it from stock materials. If I need a part I use an online Cessna dealership to determine what the ballpark figure is. If its reasonable then I just order it from them, a week later its at the local dealer whom I try to support. If its expensive then I'll search the online part suppliers such as Preferred Airparts and look for new old stock. If its not available I go to the bone yards. If you post the kit part number you may have greater success from other members. I've been at the local Cessna dealer asked for a part that's not listed as for sale and yet they pulled one out covered in dust. Lastly I have also asked Cessna to make a part they stated was no longer available and they did that as well but as you can guess it wasn't cheap and took two months to arrive.

You might have thought you provided sufficient information to gain responses, but you really didn't provide much info when you think about it. Which model aircraft? Which WING? Which actual part numbers do you need? Are you qualified and equipped to do this yourself? or are you expecting to hire someone else to do it? (IF you expect someone else to do it, are you going to attempt to purchase the parts yourself? and supply them to the repairman? If they are the wrong parts or if they do not fit, will you expect him to then make them "good"? Have you ever tried taking your eggs to the restaraunt and asking them to fry them for you?)BobWallace wrote:Bumping this one up....What? 87 views and no comments? Cheers/Wallace
If you are using a qualified sheet-metal repairman or shop, they will doubtless have all the necessary contacts to obtain the proper parts they will need for your repair. If you intend to do this repair yourself, and you don't know how to find part numbers and parts, then how can you expect others to read your message with credibility? Not being rude here...just bringing the reality of this discussion to focus.
Yes, the outboard sections are sometimes called "breakaway" sections, and yes they are damaged sufficiently often that "kits" were sometimes made available for repairs. But this aircraft has not been in production for a very long time, and new Cessnas do not use the same parts (wing-sections and profiles have changed) and if you find a "kit" you'll simply be lucky. You'll probably have to do as Jim recommended.... call a Cessna distrubutor and order the parts. (You'll be treated to more efficient service if you provide the actual part numbers to them.) Do you have an Illustrated Parts Catalog? Do you know your aircraft's serial number?
Again, I can't just let folks know I need a "light bulb". A bit more info is needed if you want people to recognize your request as credible enough to take time to research and/or respond helpfully.
