Door Re-skinning

Post by mongo2 »

Has anyone re-skinned their doors, and if so, are there any "gotcha's" regarding the order of re-riveting and
installation of the latch assy? I have both doors bare, un-skinned , latches repaired but not installed, new windows attached to their frames and I am in the process of duplicating the orginal skins.

Also,

1.What would be the best way to re-install the window frame back to the door?. I have not riveted the new hinges to either side yet.

2.What is the purpose of the clevis pin which is item 55, fig 32, 170A IPC?

Merry Christmas to all

Just venturing a guess: Some of the later 172 plate assy's (item 27) were positioned/stabilized with a screw and a rivnut slightly below center...earlier models with a clevis pin slightly above center.

Fig 32 illustration does not show the later screw/rivnut, but a mid-1960's 172 door I have doesn't use the clevis despite the hole for it being present. It uses a round-headed screw which mates with a rivnut in the inner door handle bracket (item 14).

Thanks George.

So in your opinion, is the clevis pin even needed in the A model?

I've done it and as I've previously posted the area about the upper hinge has a few difficult rivets but not impossible. The window hinges tend to get a work out and when replaced the use of blind rivets tends to open up the hinge attachment point in the door. If I were to do it again I would install nut plates in the door, then the hinge replacement would be a snap.

I wouldn't think so ...provided you have the screw/rivnut setup. (To be honest, once those corner screws are installed I can't imagine what the screw-rivnut or the clevis accomplishes.)

Thanks Guys. I would agree with you George that the pin is really not needed. As far as the window hinge is concerned, I like
Jim's idea of using rivnuts in the door frame for attaching the window hinges. My holes are already 1 size up. As far as reskinning,I'm going to use solid rivets everywhere i can, and cherry's for the rest.

I suppose it's also possible to drill thru from the upper doorsill and use countersunk screws and nuts.
