Rubber Gaskets under gear leg covers

Post by 4-Shipp »

I have read several posts here over the years referencing rubber gaskets under the gear leg covers or similar. My plane has never had these. Would someone please post a picture of their gaskets and installation details? I assume these are owner manufactured parts-is this correct? thanks,

Bruce, the seals you reference are Cessna pn 0511124 and sell for about $94 8O 8O (item 2 below). If you don't have them I would make my own with some thin rubber or silicon casket material and use the the cover plate as a template (item 1 below pn 0511124). The exhaust from the tailpipes runs right over this cover so it is a good idea to have them installed to keep CO out of your cabin area. You would have to remove the gear to install or it may be possible to install them from the bottom up by removing the wheel and axle.

Or just slit the trailing edge and slip over the leg.

I did think of that but did not want to condon the "major" alteration of Cessna certified parts. I was leaving that for blueldr to suggest.

While I cannot certify that may gaskets are official aircraft parts, they are rectangular and are split aft. At the split, the ends overlap to assure a reasonable seal.

Oops! Gives me an idea tho. Vacuum sealable, no worms.....

Heres the photo from another thread that shows the exhaust path over the gear seal and the lower door seal for that matter.

53 170B. I get exhaust smell on base to final with the heat on. I installed gear seals during the rebuild. Reskinned the door and new seals so all is good there. I suspect that my fumes are coming in from the hole for the struts as there is no seal. It is as a direct hole to the interior as the gear is. There is edge molding on the end of the strut but by no means a seal. Has anyone come up with s good way of sealing this off?

Aluminum-foil tape (such as is used for masking prior to painting) is what I used to seal my strut openings. (My natural aluminum airplane makes it almost undetectable.)

The rubber gaskets can be made from old inner tube material. Be certain to CLEAN it first with alcohol (or with plumber's PVC cleaner (purple) ... then cut it oversized at the area of the split.... and then, after installation, ...using ordinary tire-patching/self-vulcanizing cement.... overlap and cement the gasket upon itself, and you'll have a no-gap gasket-seal.
