THRU BOLTS

Post by derf62 »

I am receiving a number of different responses regarding the replacement of the thru bolts after splitting a case. Yes I know TMC states that upon O/H thru bolts must be replaced. Any input appreciated?

The reason bolts are torqued are in order to impart a "stretch" to them which assists them in properly fastening the item without exceeding the bolts' strength. If they've been in service for the life of an overhaul, they've received billions of pounding vibrations attempting to slide those case-halves against each other, and keeping those cylinders from blowing off their mounts.
It's not really a complete overhaul unless all the parts called for are replaced or re-certified. I'd replace them.
