O 300 C?

O 300 C?

Hi all, I'm new member. I am going to take a look at a 48 ragwing, the airplane verbelly sounds good but... It has a o300C for a mill. I know from research that it came with a c-145 and heard of people using o300's on A and B models. My question has anyone seen a 337 or stc for a O300-C for a ragwing? I kinda had my sights on a A or B model but the ragwing looks kinda cool too, but if the seller canot come up with paper for that engine well...
So any info guys and gals would be greatly apreciated.

The 170 type certificate lists C-145 & O-300A as approved engines. The 170 Association's list of 337's/STC's includes "C-145 to O-300C". You might want to contact Velvet to get a copy.
My Continental overhaul manual sez the C-145-2 & O-300A are essentially the same; the C-145-2H & the O-300B are essentially the same (a C-145-2 with added provisions for hydraulically controlled prop); O-300C & O-300D are essentially the same (with 6 bolt crank flange) except the D has a right-angle-drive starter.
Hopefully the ragwing's O-300C installation is already 337'd or otherwise documented as legal. If it was installed in the old days they may have just made a logbook entry & called it good--things were a lot looser back then.
Don't be afraid of the ragwing. Everybody wants a B model--I did too,I just bought my ragwing to fly til I found a good deal on a B. 6 years later,I'm still in the ragwing.....

The O-300-C has been installed on virtually all the model 170's via field approval. The only difference in the "C" from the "A" (which is an approved engine) is the 6-bolt prop flange vs. the 8-bolt, and the necessary change in prop from a DM or MDM to an EM prop. It should be an easy field approval, as the "C" engine was an approved engine also on the later 172 (derivative of the 170). (My FSDO has no problem with it, and in fact, at least one airplane was actually imported and rec'd an original airworthiness certificate issued directly by the FAA with that engine/prop.)
But, and this is important, the aircraft paperwork should include a Form 337 with Block 3 signed by the FAA, which shows the installation of the engine/prop.

Are new cranks or camshafts available for the later model 0-300's?

Thanks folks, my buddy checked out the plane as a pre pre purchase today for me, logs are in order there's a 337 for both the engine and the screw. All I have to talk is price and check compression.

I don't think there was any change in the cam (re: A vs C). New cams are available.
Cranks are more plentiful for the C/D series engines due to later design.
