This is my first oil change that I have done since acquiring 36V. It is an o300D with a spin-on filter adapter (from F&M or H&M somthing like that) from Texas. Drained the oil from the quick drain which is installed in the aft position of the sump. I have read some posts that mention screens but cannot find any that answer this question. With a spin-on, are there any oil screens that require cleaning and if so where are they located? Thanks
On my motor, no. The spin on filter adapter takes the place of the screen.
At last annual, we actually pulled the adapter off to verify there was no screen. None found.
BTW, IF you pull the adapter off, use new crush gaskets or it will leak.
No there are not any screens really. Yes the course suction screen on the lower left rear accessory case is still there but it is so course it will only stop parts with long serial numbers on them. I don't think many with the F&M or any other filter system bother to check it.
The F&M and Continental oil filter adapter replace the secondary screen which would be te fine screen that you would check if you didn't have the filter adapter.
CAUTION - My forum posts may be worth what you paid for them!

I'm sure someone will respond with a part number for the crush washer to be used when installing your F&M oil filter adapter back onto your engine. I don't happen to have it here at home, but it is a common crush washer and most any aircraft supply company, including Aircraft Spruce will have it. Also I would think most FBO's with good mechanical services will have a supply of crush washers to choose from. When removing or installing filters on the adapter, take care not to rotate the adapter itself. Doing so could cause a leak. I have had mine to rotate on several occasions and have not developed a leak, but one can prevent the adapter from moving by taking care. Its usually removing the old filter that the adapter is most likely to be moved. Good luck.
Yep, I think that maybe it did rotate a small amount. If anyone has access to the info about the crush gasket please post as well as torque for the adapter. Thanks
The crush gaskets are standard parts and can be treated as such. No special approval or part numbers required....like an AN bolt or a light bulb.
The F&M filter folks DO make a replacement (fiber) gasket that helps prevent the rotation of the part. I bought the kit from F&M for $12.00 last year...it's just a crush gasket and a thick fiber gasket. Still just standard parts.
For chrissakes..!!! Do NOT REMOVE THAT FILTER ADAPATOR and you'll have no problems. The "common crush washer" is NOT what is as important as having the correcd fiber washer supplied by FM Enterprises. The proper torque for the square nut/adaptor is 60-65 ft/lbs. Use only DC-4 to lubricate the washer/gasket.

George, I linked to the El Reno site to find this message:
WARNING!
Recently, El Reno Aviation closed their doors and auctioned off all items in their inventory including many F&M Oil Filter Adapters. The oil filter adapters are now being sold at very low prices on the internet and some F.B.O.s.
BUYER BEWARE... IF IT SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS!
These adapters have been on the shelf for nearly 10 years. The oil filters have exceeded the manufacturers shelf life. Many of the adapters have corrosion due to a high moisture storage environment. Most do not have the correct gaskets. F&M made a change in gaskets and machining approximately 5 years ago. Without a thorough inspection by F&M personnel, F&M WILL NOT SUPPORT THESE ADAPTERS. We charge $200.00 for a thorough inspection. Request for new paperwork or gaskets will be compared to the serial numbers sold during auction.
Karl, that warning is issued by FM Enterprises....ABOUT El Reno filter adaptors (which were made
for them by F M, but sold without STC, and which were an earlier version of the adaptor.)
FM its warning that those will NOT BE SUPPORTED by FM, unless a fee is paid.
I do not recommend El Reno surplus adaptors.

I just finished an annual. Moved the F&M oil filter adapter and of course it leaked. Called them to find out what type of material they made the gasket out of as I have made gaskets for over 40 years. How hard can it be? Well I have figured out it is best to order one from them when you need it because:
That type of gasket material has a 3 to 5 year shelf life.
I have gone 3 years and not had a leak, so If I purchased a piece of gasket material and stored it flat the rubber in it would start to get hard and the compress ability goes away when the rubber gets hard. This gasket material expands when it get in contact with oil. The men at F & M picked the proper material however as little as I use it to purchase a piece and keep it at hanger would not be cost effective and when I needed it the shelf life would have been met.
