switching from lady legs to straight legs
I have a 1954 170 b with lady legs and would like to know if straight legs will work on it.

By straight legs, you mean the older version of landing gear?
Yes, they are interchangeable on all 170's.
But why? Most people like/want the lady legs.

David is right, They will fit. Why would you want to do that?

I don't want to but am unable to find a left lady leg to replace a damaged one that i have. I know others that have switched to 180 legs is there a benefit to that?

Re: switching from lady legs to straight legs
The 180 gear will be stiffer yet and a few inches taller. Depending on where you fly, 'better' is subjective. You will need separate approval for them. I don't think there is an STC.
The older gear Should be easier to find since everyone swaps to the newer. Also, they are the same left to right.
You might want to post a Wanted Add on here. Someone is bound to have a set. Or even two people with one each

Geez I finally tossed my old lady legs after carting them around for decades after converting to the straight or 180 legs. I think maybe call Dean at Copper River Airmotive in Copper River Alaska he may have some. 907-822-4004 or crairmotive@hotmail.com
Good luck

OK I read the article on emails and how they are mostly misinterpreted. I do however have to say that after having gone through the STC process and in the middle of another it can be yelling when you print STC
