Maybe George Horn screws around longer after engine start than I used to. Early on, when I first got my C-170B, I turned the fuel off after shut down. Then one day I cranked up, not far from the run up pad , and lined up to go, I jabbed "Clydes Pride" in the butt and made it about 100 feet down the runway when it got real quiet. From then on, I only turmed the fuel off when parked leaning one way or the other or for some other reason than just shutting things down.

Ever notice how little fuel flows from the gascolator when the fuel selector is off?

Before I own my 170 I owned a 182. I can tell you that that airplane would not even start with the fuel selected off. I had been out changing the oil on that airplane one day and left my 6 year old in the cockpit for a few minutes while I did something??? Well the next time I got in the airplane to fly the engine would not start. After more troubleshooting that I want to admit it was discovered that the fule selector was in the O.F.F. position. lessons learned? Don’t leave a kid in the airplane ever and use that stinking piece of paper.

With my valve turned off, I couldn't get 2 hangers away. With the valve off, I get about a teaspoon of fuel out of the gasolator. I also turn the selector to one side or the other to stop fuel from right to left side.
