1956 172 panel overlay..

Post by pmel22 »

Hi,I know this is the 170 association but I fiqured you guys might possibly be able to point me in the right direction. I just purchased a 1956 172. I would like to replace the panel overlay. Been looking around the last week or so and got close but no cigar..The one I need is pictured on page 156 in the cessna parts catalog, its item 11. Any ideas? Thanking you in advance for your time and effort. BTW I started flight trainning a few years ago and never finished . I am
using this pretty bird to finally get it done. Thanks again, Pete

Pete your '56 172 is closer to our 170s than most of the 172s. Your welcome to join us as all are. We have several members of the Association who are 172 owners.
CAUTION - My forum posts may be worth what you paid for them!

The pic Aryana posted appears to be of PN 0513004-25, From 170-B IPC, Pg 76, Fig 43, Item 8.

For reference, here is a pic of PN 0513004-10 "Cover Assy, Shock Mounted Panel":

(Well...for some reason pics are not posting this morning.... numerous attempts....)

Anyway, Pete.... you should poste the exact Part Number you are seeking.... there were many with minor variations....

Pete,
First, welcome to the C-170 website!

As you know the part number you are looking for is 0513004-26. For those of us too lazy to buy a C-172 IPC here is a screen shot from the page you referenced:

Now here is a screen shot of p/n 0513004-26 from the C-170 IPC:

Notice the different cutout for the gyro horizon and compass. It could be that the illustration in the C-172 IPC is for the later model 172's; i.e. p/n 0513004-35. Anyway, p/n 0513004-26 has been superseded by p/n 0513004-10. I'm guessing that the new part number is made from plastic. It is available from Preferred Air Parts. It appears that the panel Ayrana is offering is for the non-gyro panel, p/n 0513004-28 or p/n 0513004-33. It would be quite easy to use a punch and flare tool or even a circle cutter and then a flaring tool to make the additional holes. If I was you I'd jump at Ayrana's offer; you're going have to search long and hard to find an overlay in better condition.

It looks like George and I were typing at the same time, hence the repetition. As usual George beat me to the punch. :P

Aryana wrote:George, thanks for clearing that up! I was a bit puzzled because I thought that overlay would fit the '56 for sure...now it all makes sense that he is looking for the actual panel, not overlay.
Actually, he is looking for the "overlay"...the so-called "cover". The one you pictured is a -25 for the 170B.

The one Bruce pictured is the -26, from the early 172.

Bruce, I have a -10, and it is all metal. It has the cutout for the AN gyro horizon.
FINALLY It POSTED!
FINALLY It POSTED!

Bruce, I don't know how you got into this. Please accept my apologies; I did not intend to tarnish your reputation for accurate, thoughtful posts. :) George, The -10 is the superseded p/n for the -26. It is what my second IPC screenshot shows above. I was guessing it was plastic but you've corrected that. (The top screenshot was of a -35 panel overlay I believe.) If in fact what you have pictured is what Pete needs, Preferred Air Parts has one new one in stock.

If any of you have a extra B panel overlay, I am assembling a 53 that could use one. Bought the plane with some assembly required. Turns out it needed a lot of reassembly due to incorrect assembly by the previous owner. Send a PM if you have one you want to part with.

Well, I'm new to the 170 club. I'm actually restoring N5000A which is the first 172 (sn 28000). I also need an overlay like the on gahorn posted photos of. Any help would be appreciated.

Ya, she's in Quincy, IL now. I've had her for about a year and a half. Really got started on the restoration in July. Now all paint is stripped, interior and windows all out. Wings are off in my hangar being polished now. Fuselage is down the taxiway at AirSpectrum who is doing the complete inside as we speak. I need to set up an online photo book with all the photos.

FYI - during the Benton Harbor flyin (fun time) I wound up in Dawagiac (C91) MI a couple of times. There was a former car dealer
based there that has an early 172 that has won the best original plane at Oshkosh in the past. When you look it is in the
the row of past winners. If you are interested in seeing it he is really nice guy and the FBO can probably get you together.

Hi Guys!

I bought a 56 Cessna 172. I'm looking for the panel overlay. Do somebody has one to sell?

Best regards!
