N3585C flying again after oops

Post by phantomphixer »

Got the ole girl back into the air last Thursday after my LH brake failure ground loop at Chandler, AZ in May. Used North Sound Aviation in Sedro Wooley, WA to straighten the L MLG. Takes a while but Jim does excellent work and it's really hard to find a "lady leg" gear. After all said and done cost less than $2k to get her flying again.
Now for what I discovered. The left brake did not fail. I discovered a cracked flair in the brake line at the fuselage connection. Was in a hurry when I took it apart to trailer her home but as I was cleaning up parts to reinstall I discovered the missing piece of flair at that union. I originally notice a hyd leak at the brake assy. Thought it was an "O" ring and cleaned up brake assy and installed a new "O" ring. Apparently fluid was seeping down the brake line and I missed it. Bled the brakes and thought I'd solved it. $2k oops. This is not an item you would check on annual. But just thought I'd give an update on the ole girl and put in my $2000.00 cents worth.
Got in 3 landings this weekend and ready to go again.

Glad to hear she's back in the air.

People seem of be looking for gear repair from time to time. Have we talked about North Sound Aviation and their gear repair capabilities before?

Bruce, I hate to be the one to mention this to a fellow ITC Member,
but did you know this forum has a SEARCH routine?

Glad to hear your flying again!

The forum does have a search feature but it's not the easiest way to find info some times.
I've spent entire evenings, trying to find an old post about some such thing that I know I read at one time.

Forums are great for discussions but not really for archiving information.
As much as I dislike wikis, they are incredible for storing the kind of information that is often asked (and repeated) here.
We have a MASSIVE amount of good information on this forum. We should look into technologies that help us better organize it for people looking for answers.
Just a thought.

So I take it the answer is yes.

Search routine, really, I thought the search routine most used was just to ask. Though I'd try it out.

Glad I'm not the only with trouble searching old posts. The few times I do search I don't usually find what I'm looking for.

North Sound Aviation
360 661 3302
I talked to him this morning on testing the Lady Legs I have. He has the templates and will strip,NDI,epoxy prime. Straighten if neccesary and shotpeen. He stays busy doing 195 gear legs. For shipping he reccomends wrapping in paper and band together, then wrap the entire assy in duct tape. Wrapping in paper first makes it easier to unwrap.

Thanks Mike. That is the good FRESH info I hoped would be brought out by asking about North Sound Aviation rather than searching OLD possibly STALE info.

Search routine.... hmmm.... wonder if we have anything on MMO.

Searching for "North Sound" posted by user "gahorn" provided 10 links, Four of which are directly linked to landing gear leg repair discussions....(not including THIS one).

One of them states:
"Not offering a specific "recommendation"...only offering a lead to those whom I've got in my list claiming to do gear leg inspections:

James Blaine Hayton., North Sound Aviation. 30578 Walberg Road, Sedro Woolley, WA. 98284
And,
Steve Knopp at 360-629-4812 (Pponk gear mods) I"ve talked to Steve over the years and he is especially knowlegeable about this landing gear.

The procedure is also listed in our MX Library: http://www.cessna170.org/forums/viewtop ... +corrosion
Any reputable shop with structural inspection authority, and with appropriate equipment should be able to accomplish this.
