Please help identify these tips!!

Post by piclr60 »

Can anyone tell me what these wing tips might be. These were on the machine when I bought it with no paper work of course. Could these be the STC version SA172NW?

Looking to complete the paperwork process correctly. Thanks for the help. Brad- piclr60@comcast.net

Hard to say what tips they are.

These appear to be a bit deeper than those found on later Cessna's* but not nearly as deep as the Madras/Demer (Deemer) tips which I remember to be deeper.

The Madras tips have been associated with STC#SA549NW in another site. So if they are Madras they probably aren't covered by STCSA172NW

* A Cessna tip replacement picture can be seen near te bottom at the Met-Co-Aire site shttp://www.metcoaire.com/products/product_cessna.shtml

Good luck in the hunt for the info and if/when you find it please share it with us so we can help the next guy.

Instead of trying to chase down the paperwork and possibly having to buy the STC, consider putting the original tips back on.
They go for a couple hundred bucks and only take a dozen or so screws to swap out.

They look exactly like the C206 tips that were on my C180 when I bought it. If you leave them on, drill a small hole in the trailing edge of the back point, they collect water in that drooped down area.

Those tips are apparently what I have seen on several 170's and what is on my 172 (C). They are likely Horton STOL tips. Couldn't tell from your photo if your plane has the cuff on the leading edge or not. If it does they would in all likely hood be Hortons or one of the other stol tips. If you don't have the leading edge cuff stc, then I am not sure what they are. Jim W, if you catch this thread, aren't these tips like yours? I don't recall if you have the cuffs or not.

Thanks for all the great info. Believe it or not I went to the airport today to fly before the big ice storm tomorrow and another 170 showed up with the exact same tips. He had the Horton kit on his aircraft. They look identical. But I do not have anything other than the tips. Getting closer-

Keep the guesses coming.

I just went out to the hangar and looked at the drooped tips removed from my C180. They are Cessna p/n 1223000-7 for the left wing and -8 for the right, for the older Cessna 206 with no leading edge cuff. The trailing edge from the outboard point to the edge of the wing is just a little over 12".

These were removed when the Sportsman kit and RMD tips were installed. They had been installed since the late 1970s with just a logbook entry I guess since they were Cesnna parts and a direct replacement for the stock tips. They were never questioned at an annual.

Your tips looks just like my tips on my 170B with the Horton Stol kit. Sorry, I haven't figured out to post a picture.
Hope this helps!

In the picture shown, it is pretty obvious that the wing does not have the Horton cuff installed.

Looks like the tips on my 170B - Metcoaire. Are they fiberglass? (mine are). Also have paperwork (limited) on these.
