That's five minutes from my house. I wish I had known you were going out; I would have loved to oogle over your airplane, John! Do you ever come down for the EAA fly-in they host?

Sorry Ryan, I considered letting you know we were coming down but this was a working trip and I was unsure of how our timing would work out. We were there to photograph one of Allen Strong's Classic Cars (a Packard that belonged to Carl Fisher the father of the Indianapolis Speedway, this Packard in fact paced the 1915 Indy 500). When is the EAA fly-in?

No worries. I'm sure it will work out one of these days! I think the fly-in is in the August-September timeframe, but I'll be in your neck of the woods in August as well for a contest.

Was that car in the museum? I haven't seen it, but my several times through the museum were largely self-guided; Rudy opened the door and said "have at it". It is certainly cool to see the collection they have amassed.

The Packard is in Allen Strong's museum, it will be on display at the August 25th Geneva Concours d'Elegance.

Is the August R/C contest in St. Charles? Give me the date, maybe that will work for both of us.

Yesterday I returned my J3 Cub to the site of its first US Navy duty in 1942. This is what remains of NAS Hutchinson, Kansas. (On the charts it's the Sunflower Gliderport, privately owned now.) So glad the glider clubs maintained a runway for me to use!

Got to hop a ride tonight in the EAA Ford Tri Motor. I can see why they were used for bush planes. That thing jumped off with a load of people and while I got bounced around quite a bit on my way down to the airport they were using, the Ford was solid.

Cool! I remember Dad buying us kids a ride out of Bowman Filed in Louisville, Ky when I was a kid. I can still remember being facinated with watching the control cables moving on the OUTSIDE of the airplane.

I also think it's neat how they stowed luggagage, at least on some models:

I found the luggage storage compartment interesting on Miles' photo. I do not recall having seen that previously. I had the opportunity to purchase a ride in a Ford Tri-Motor out at Lancaster Airport (LNC) back in the 1970's. Cost $20.00 for about a 20 minute ride. Well worth it!

It cannot open in flight. The baggage door is hand cranked down. At least on the one I flew. Doug
