Battery Replacement

Post by BlakeinAlabama »

I need to replace my battery, died all the sudden, will not take a charge. Suggestions on the best replacement? It's mounted on the right side of firewall, not sure if all are in the same location. Blake

They are not all in the same location. See your IPC.
I have switched over to the Concord RG battery with satisfactory results. (I got tired of checking electrolyte levels and worrying about that expensive battery box corroding using a lead/acid battery.)

I agree with George, go with the Concord. They may cost a couple of dollars more, but it's worth the extra bucks. I got tired of replacing the Gill after short periods of use.

I spoke with concorde today about my battery. they indicated that is you let it drain completely, it is not able to be recharged. I had actually tried to recharge to no avail. Looks like a new one for me.

Can you give me details or point me towards the STC and a part number for the battery, price, dealers etc?

I just looked real quick and do not see any battery STC for the 170 from them.

Call Concord of course but I think they will tell you that the RG series is now considered a direct replacement for a CB battery under PMA. Before they were considered a direct replacement Concord got STCs which allowed the use of an RG type. They still hold the STCs of course and they can be used but are not necessary in many cases.

I had a Concorde RG-25XC installed in the 170 in 2006. It is still starting great. In 2012, I left the master switch on and completely ran the battery down to where LED instrument lights would not come on. Connecting a standard charger just to energize the alternator, then hand propping the engine, and flying for 30 minutes brought the battery back to life and it has not caused any problems since. It has flown 275 hours since it was installed.

I also have Odessey batteries in the C-180 and C-195 on the firewall. They give similar service. The 180 got the firewall battery conversion in 1996. The first Odessey battery lasted 9 years and the second Odessey battery is just now starting to get weak, and that is with starting an O-520 engine with high compression pistons in the 180. I put the first Odessey battery in my lawn tractor and it still starts strong. The 195 got converted in 2008 and is still going strong on its first Odessey battery.

I have had no trouble getting the firewall mounted Odessey batteries Field Approved, but that is in Alaska, your mileage may vary.

Your concord will come with all the paper work in the box, fill it out and take it to your A&P-IA to sign the 337 to return to service.

No need for any field approval as the box comes with the STC.
You will need a 337 filled out to place the STC in your aircraft's history records, that requires a A&P-IA to sign for return to service.
