Harness With/Without Elbows?

Post by N1478D »

Planning on replacing the harnesses during the annual coming up. The IPC shows elbows, the current harnesses don't have elbows. What are your thoughts? Are the elbows worth having? And, the angle looks greater than 90 degrees in the IPC. The shopping so far only shows eblow angles of 90 degrees. Wondering if there have been any unhappiness with a certain brand, or, if a brand has stood out from the others.

THANKS In Advance!

Being that on my ragwing's pressure cowl the front two cyclinders leads chafe on the upper pressure cowl, it was like that when I bought it this summer. So I have two options, make two eyebrows in the pressure cowl to acomdate the straight leads or buy two leads with the elbows on them. Even with the elbows I may have to make a relief area on the pressure cowl as the current day spark plugs are a little longer than the ones in 1948.
If you dont have the pressure cowl your golden, but I think straight leads are a little cheaper, what I am going to use are straight ends on the lower plugs and straight leads on cyl 1 and 2 and 90 deg leads on cyl 3 4 5 and 6 for the upper. but it will probably come down to what we have in stock in our shop.

At Select, a shop at LNC, the elbows added $30 for the pair of harnesses. It was a verbal quote.

Elbows were originally designed to accomodate early insulation materials that would not tolerate sharp bends and vibration without cracking.
Elbows are an unnecessary expense if you don't have an interefence-fit problem. Modern ignition harnesses are very flexible and can be routed, clamped with Adel clamps, even ty-wrapped back down to the plug, to prevent chafing.

I put on new Slick mags & harnesses about 3 years ago. They came with straight leads. I haven't ever noticed a problem with them. I have the airbox baffling on my ragwing also.
I do have the leads tie-wrapped in place inside the airbox--on the RH side to the breather tube & on the LH side to I can't remember what  Maybe just each other.
