Aeroshell "expiration"
What do you all think of this?

My CFI and old timer flyin buddy says they are nuts, "that damn dinosaur oil is millions of years old, it ain't gonna expire in 4 years".
I realize it is the additives they are concerned about. I have several cases that I bought at OSH in '05-'07.
I'm gonna use them and not worry about it, but was curious what the group thinks about this "expiration" business.

Re: Aeroshell "expiration"
every 2 years we have the IA meeting, and every year the Shell oil guy is there. I've asked him twice if there is any documented failure from using out of date oil.... he would never say yes, only skirting around and hinting that it was possible. so if anyone knows of such an incident, post it up, 'cause I've never heard of one
Re: Aeroshell "expiration"
I was given a case or two of old Mobil "RED Band" aviation oil which was in the old, round cans. It must have been dated back into the early 60's. I've been using it in my tractor and some of my cheap friends have used it in their airplanes with no ill effects we can find. (But "Red Band" was a non-AD oil.)

Re: Aeroshell "expiration"
That old oil likely didn't cause any issues George because it was so slow (ie: RED)

Re: Aeroshell "expiration"
It may be because of the plastic containers degrading over time, not the oil.
Re: Aeroshell "expiration"
I heard that you can extend the shelf life if you add some MMO to the mix
Re: Aeroshell "expiration"
If it appears to be too thick, thin it with mogas to keep the TEL out of the crankcase.
