The "square" section is what slips over the lip of the door, while the open "P" section is what fills the gap between the window-frame and the door. It's an absolutely PERFECT weatherseal for the openable door windows, and exactly the correct size as well.

It does not cause much stress when you close the window and it stays in place if you open the window and it is cheap. Bill K
That's what my mechanic/IA installed when He did the annual a couple of years ago. My 170 had that same thing when it was built in 1950, not the formed/extruded rubber seal.

Your 170, when it was built in 1950, did not have a foam strip with adhesive backing from Home Depot.

It had a 1/4" folded rubber gasket which was pasted onto the door with MEK-cement. (I have a never-installed, NOS door/window in my hangar complete with the original deteriorated rubber gasket to prove it.)

The last time this was discussed I took Georges suggestion and went to Brown and company and got the "P" shaped seals. I had the flat sticky back foam on the windows and over time it started to seporate and then the wind got at it while taxing. I found the "P" shaped seals to be easy to put on and they mated better between the window and the door frame. Very happy with the George/Brown solution.
